Building a World where Photography Protects its Makers

Imaginaries of Freedom is a global rights-driven photography platform and activation model

The Problem

Photographers working in civic and struggle contexts often experience a systematic loss of control over how their images circulate. Work becomes decontextualized. Consent is broken or unclear. Economic and archival protections are weak.

IoF responds with a comprehensive framework: authorship protection, consent and contextual integrity, ethical and non-extractive circulation, fair economic participation, and DIY Exhibition Kits enabling global access to high-integrity exhibitions.

Our Vision

Build a replicable global platform enabling youth and communities to ethically learn, produce, and share civic photography. The South Africa – Palestine chapter is the foundational model — designed to expand into future chapters across the world.

Our Values

Every decision at Imaginaries of Freedom is guided by these principles

Authorship Protection

Photographers retain full copyright Their names, contexts, and consent documentation travel with every image.

Contextual Integrity

Images are never decontextualized. Context panels, captions, and consent records are inseparable from the work.

Non-Extractive Practice

Fair commission fees, transparent revenue sharing (60-70% to photographers), and optional solidarity safety funds.

Ethical Circulation

Licensing tiers ensure images circulate responsibly. Photographers can withdraw work if safety conditions change.

Cross-Geographic Equity

Equal dignity and support for photographers regardless of geography, ensuring no financial burden on participants.

Co-Creation

Photographers are co-creators, not content suppliers. The program is built with, not for, participating artists.
